Adversity is not the same for every student. For some, it is poverty. For others, it is family breakdown, violence, or a community that has stopped expecting things of them. The common thread is a ceiling — and the belief that the ceiling is permanent.
Darius James grew up in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in circumstances that shaped how he understands adversity. When he speaks about overcoming difficult odds, he is not describing a case study.
